Have you considered equipping your children to penetrate their schools, their streets and neighbourhoods as they disciple their friends and lead childrens cell groups. This generation must be trained as a mission generation.
How can they be trainied for this? Have YOU seen this happen? Have you any questions? Have you any stories?

Lets take this step by step!!!

It seems that there are two issues here - the children already in the church and those who you are wanting to reach for Jesus.

So those already in the church -

In the IG cells every cell needs to be discipling their children the same way that they disciple the adulte in the cell meeting ie by applying the Word to their lives (Word section), and by focusing on those who are lost to Jesus (Witness section). The children themselves then will begin to be challenged about outreach, pray, minister and be mobilised. I can let you (and any others reading) have reading material, cell meeting material and help with this if you email me at daphne@Gnation2gnation.com. The adults would never be allowed to go into another room to play during a cell meeting and the same values and structures need to be applied to the children in every cell. Discipling the children needs to be a lifestyle of the church just as it is with the adults. Jesus never invented a programme for the children!

Then transitioning to childrens cells instead of Sunday School will give all children the opportunity to live out most cell values. This also gives them a model by which you can intentionally raise children as cell leaders for their street, schools and friends. Again - help is on hand if you email me for material and training for Sunday School teachers!!!

The mid week programme that you have will be affected by the above changes that you make. the values that you introduce can gradually become a part of this IF you decide to continue with them. However outreach is best relational, and childrens evangelists, in my opinion, are CHILDREN evangelists! The changes I have suggested will help to mobilise and train them. Once you have made these changes you may see outreach to children differently and have it coming out of the IG cells, or you may have interest groups etc However I would focus on the other changes first.

As for the homeschoolers. You obviously have parents who recognise the value of being the primary ones to change their childrens lives, and I would see this as a great bonus rather than an obstacle. Have they been pro actively mobilsed in the area of discipling them? If you have equipping for adults, a part of that needs to be inspiring, equipping and holding them accountable for the discipleship of their children and that includes training them to win the lost and to make disciples. It is no good educating them without bringing them up to fulfil Jesus final command to "make disciples of all nations". Children can make disciples! And ... you will not be surprised to know that I have material etc to help you with that too!!!

So I hope you can see that it is not a change of programme but rather changes that need need to be made in the culture of the church that will affect many areas, if not all of them! The Biblical culture is generational, passing on from one generation to the other but we have lost our way by becoming a peer culture.

Over to you - and to any others reading. To turn a nation around we must take the next generation and that will take all over us to be involved. The Bible has no "calling" or "department" to work with the next generation, it is a Biblical command that one generation is responsible for the next. It is time for the whole of the Body of Christ to be obedient to that command and then we will begin to see nations turn around and a generation rise up that will shout to the nations that the King is Coming!

Daphne,
Those are some wise words. Currently, in our church we have the traditional Sunday School and we do Pioneer Clubs on Wednesday night. Our Wednesday night program has been struggling and we have been left with the same feeling of not getting much out of it.

Our cell groups in the church are IG, but the children normally only participate in the icebreaker and the worship time before going to another room where sometimes they have a lesson, while other groups let the kids play together.

We have minimal outreach coming from both our VBS and our Wed night program. Some of the issues there might stem from a church with many home schoolers?

Hope this info helps and I look forward to some advice.

Good to hear from you... this question of VBS and similar comes up quite often, people are not satisfied with the fruit and start asking some questions.

Key things, I believe that are missing from such events are, for example:

relationship on an on going basis
meaningful on going relationship with the families of the children
meaningful on going relationship with those they connected to at the "event"
on going discipleship especially of those who make a committment to Jesus
a daily encounter with Jesus in a small group where the children are known and their gifts etc released. The major focus on "fun and games" to bring the children in does not reflect the Saviour who said "I will draw all men to ME"
strategy for reaping and keeping after the sowing of an outreach event.

SO moving on from that....
Can you let me know how you disciple the children who you currently have in the church.... are they in cells (IG / childrens / both?) How do you connect with families of these children?

The answer to these two questions will help in finding an answer to the original one of "what do we do?"

I am happy to discover some options with you, there is no set answer, but connecting them to the values will also mean connecting them to the structures that facilliate those values!

Look forward to hearing from you!! Daphne

Hi Daphne,

Thanks for the valuable input you have given via your posts. A general question for you:

We have nine cells in our church that is not really to be considered a cell church, but we are slowly moving in that direction. We have had the typical VBS the past few summers and we have been left with a feeling of wanting more out of the investment. Backyard Bible Clubs doesn't sound like it will work for us in our setting- Do you have any ideas of what we could be doing with our kids during the summer that might use cell group concepts?

Thanks.
