We are in the planning stages of cell groups in our church. What kind of studies did you use to start your cell groups, and how long did you train the leaders of the cell groups.

I'm gonna jump in here because no one has answered you as of yet.

Training your first cell leaders can be a short time frame of a couple of months or a long time frame of a year or even two years. It all depends on who you chose for leadership.

What future cell leaders need is cell experience, so provide a prototype group for them where you can work with each one to reach a friend for Christ and bring him or her into the prototype group to see how it should work. Also pastor them the way you want them to pastor others in the future. And yes, there's books and training o-plenty... but what your cell ministry needs most in the first prototype group with leaders is to breed the right DNA into the leaders.

The Making Cell Groups Work book by Scott Boren is really helpful in this area. If you haven't read it, you may want to pick it up. We sell it in the resource area. It was written out of case study research, so it's not theory, but info derived from actual churches and pastors who made it work and didn't make it work. Learn from their mistakes!

Others should certainly chime in here too... what was your experience training your first leaders and what would you do differently if you could do it over again?
